Introduction

At St.Illtyd’s Primary School, we are committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment for all our pupils. This policy aims to promote positive behaviour, nurture good character, and equip pupils with the skills to become responsible and respectful individuals.

Core Values:

  • Respect: We treat everyone with dignity and courtesy, regardless of their background, beliefs, or circumstances

  • Responsibility: We take ownership of our actions and choices

  • Appreciation: We are thankful for what we have and the efforts of others

  • Independence: We have the ability and confidence to take care of ourselves, make decisions, and solve problems without relying solely on others

  • Kindness: We actively seek opportunities to support and uplift others through actions, words, or simply by creating a positive atmosphere

  • Honesty:  We are truthful in our words and actions

Expected Behaviour:

We expect all pupils to:
  • Follow instructions from staff promptly and courteously

  • Be kind and respectful to others, including staff, pupils, and visitors

  • Use appropriate language and behaviour at all times

  • Take care of school property and the environment

  • Be honest and responsible for their actions

  • Work collaboratively and contribute positively in lessons and activities

Roles and Responsibilities

The children’s responsibilities are:
  • To know our school values and to adhere to them

  • To respect differences and value everyone’s contribution

  • To behave in an orderly and calm manner

  • To help make our school a safe and pleasant environment

  • To do as asked by all the adults in school

The adults’ responsibilities are:

  • To value each child’s contribution to the school

  • To create a safe and pleasant environment for learning

  • To provide a curriculum which is accessible for all children

  • To praise children regularly

  • To address incidents of misbehaviour and support children to improve their behaviour

  • To spend time each week delivering the school’s curriculum for PSE (Jigsaw)

  • To have regular contact with parents to discuss both negative and positive behaviour

The parents’ responsibilities are:
  • To ensure that our children understand the importance of their education and of good behaviour

  • To discuss their education: ask what they have learned, listen to what they have to say, encourage and help with homework

  • To praise them for their efforts and achievements

  • To ensure that our children respect differences and do not abuse or discriminate against people different from themselves

  • To encourage our children to sort out difficulties in a courteous manner

  • To speak with teachers in order to be informed about children’s behaviour and learning

  • To make sure that our children come to school every day and arrive on time – to contact school if the child is ill

  • To support the school staff in implementing the behaviour policy

  • To speak with the class teacher if home circumstances change resulting in a change to the child’s well-being or behaviour

Hierarchy of Sanctions:

We believe in a restorative approach to behaviour management that prioritises resolving issues and learning from mistakes. We follow a clear hierarchy of sanctions, ensuring fairness and consistency throughout the school.

Stage 1: Informal interventions
  • Reminder: Staff will kindly remind pupils of expected behaviour

  • Positive reinforcement: Staff will acknowledge and praise positive behaviour to encourage its repetition

  • Mediation: Staff will facilitate discussions between pupils to resolve minor conflicts

Stage 2: Formal interventions
  • Loss of privileges: Pupils may be excluded from certain privileges, such as playtime activities

  • Reflection time: Pupils may spend time working in a quiet space or adjoining class

  • Parental contact: Staff will contact parents/guardians to discuss the incident and work together to address the behaviour

  • Phase Lead Intervention: They may introduce a progress report to monitor behaviour for a fixed time period

  • Leadership Team Intervention:  A member of the Leadership Team will discuss the behaviour with pupils and work alongside the pupil and class teacher to agree next steps

Stage 3: Serious incidents
  • Headteacher intervention: The Headteacher will be involved in serious incidents and may implement additional sanctions, such as fixed-term exclusion.  The School follows the Blaenau Gwent Exclusion Guidance

  • Following established school procedures: Specific procedures will be followed for incidents involving bullying, discrimination, or serious breaches of school rules

Restorative Practices:

We actively promote restorative practices throughout the school. This might involve:

  • Circle time: Facilitating discussions to understand the impact of behaviour and encourage empathy

  • Conflict resolution: Supporting pupils in resolving conflicts collaboratively and peacefully

  • Restorative conferences: Bringing together all involved parties to discuss the incident and find solutions

Positive Reinforcement:

We believe in creating a positive and supportive environment where good behaviour is acknowledged and celebrated. We will use various strategies to reinforce positive behaviour, such as:

  • Verbal praise and encouragement: Staff will acknowledge and commend positive behaviours

  • Reward systems: We may implement a point or reward system to acknowledge positive contributions and achievements

  • Celebrating success: We will celebrate individual and collective achievements to foster a sense of belonging and pride

Partnership with Parents/Guardians:

We believe in working collaboratively with parents/guardians to promote positive behaviour. We will keep them informed of their child's progress and involve them in addressing any concerns

Review and Development:

This policy will be reviewed regularly and updated in consultation with staff, pupils, parents/guardians, and the Governing Body.

Additional Information:

This policy sits alongside other relevant school policies, such as the Anti-Bullying Policy, Equality and Diversity Policy, and Health and Safety Policy.

We are confident that by working together, we can create a positive school environment where everyone feels safe, respected, and supported to learn and thrive.
