ST. ILLTYD'S PRIMARY SCHOOL

INCLUSION POLICY

Vision:

At St. Illtyd’s Primary School, we all work together to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where all pupils, regardless of background, ability, or circumstance, feel valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential. All pupils have the right to an education that meets their individual needs and aspirations.  This policy outlines our approach to achieving this goal, with a particular focus on addressing the challenges faced by pupils.

Mission:

Our mission statement is that we, here at St. Illtyd's, will always aim to be our BEST...

Believe - We should ‘Believe’ in ourselves and each other.

Enrich - We need to be immersed and ‘Enriched’ in our daily lives and in our learning.

Succeed - We want all of our children and staff to ‘Succeed’.

Together - We believe in working ‘Together’, staff, children, parents, Governors and the local community, to achieve our best.

Core Values:

Our School curriculum is based on six core values.  These values are the heartbeat of our school and have been created in collaboration with learners, governors and families.  Our thematic learning journey centres around one value each term over a two year period.

  • Respect: We value diversity and celebrate the unique contributions of every pupil.  We treat everyone with dignity and courtesy.

  • Responsibility: We take ownership of our actions and choices.

  • Appreciation: We are thankful for what we have and the efforts of others.

  • Independence: We have the ability and confidence to take care of ourselves, make decisions, and solve problems without relying solely on others.

  • Kindness: We actively seek opportunities to support and uplift others through actions, words, or simply by creating a positive atmosphere.

  • Honesty:  We are truthful in our words and actions.

Strategies for Inclusion

At St. Illtyd’s Primary School, we actively strive to remove the barriers to learning and participation that can hinder or exclude individual pupils, or groups of pupils. We achieve educational inclusion through:

  • Early Identification of Needs: We will use a variety of assessments to identify any barriers to learning that a pupil may face. This includes working closely with families and external agencies when necessary.

  • Targeted Support: We will provide targeted support to address individual needs, through differentiated learning, access to resources, and tailored interventions. This may include support for language acquisition, emotional well-being, and specific learning difficulties.

  • Positive Learning Environment: We will create a positive and supportive learning environment where everyone feels safe to take risks, learn from mistakes, and celebrate their achievements. This includes fostering positive relationships between pupils and staff, and promoting anti-bullying strategies.

  • Curriculum for All: We will ensure the curriculum is broad, balanced, and relevant to all pupils, reflecting the experiences and aspirations of our community. This will include opportunities for pupils to develop their cultural understanding and social awareness.

  • Parental Engagement: We will actively engage with families as key partners in their child's education. This includes providing regular communication, opportunities for involvement in school decision-making, and access to resources and support.

  • Community Partnerships: We will work in partnership with relevant agencies, community groups, and charities to access additional resources and support for pupils and families.

Addressing Deprivation

In recognition of the challenges faced by pupils from areas of high deprivation, the school will take the following specific actions:

  • Breakfast Club: We will offer a breakfast club to ensure all pupils have access to a healthy breakfast before the start of the school day.

  • Free School Meals and Uniform Support: We will promote the availability of free school meals and offer support to families who may struggle with the cost of uniforms.

  • Extra-Curricular Activities: We will provide a range of affordable or free extra-curricular activities to enrich pupils' learning and broaden their horizons.

  • Families First, Social Workers and Support Staff: We will work closely with social workers and other support staff to ensure pupils receive the holistic support they need to thrive in school.

Monitoring and Evaluation

This policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure its effectiveness in promoting inclusion and addressing the needs of all pupils. We will monitor the progress of pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds and identify areas where we can improve our provision.

Conclusion

St. Illtyd’s Primary School is committed to being a truly inclusive school where every pupil is valued and can succeed. By working together with pupils, parents/carers, and the wider community, we can ensure that all our pupils have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
