At St Illtyd’s Primary School, we were delighted to welcome the families of our Year 2 and Year 3 pupils to our recent Reading Café.
The event was designed to celebrate reading and strengthen the partnership between home and school. Parents and carers joined their children for an afternoon of shared reading, games and practical activities, all aimed at supporting reading development in a fun and engaging way.
During the session, staff demonstrated some of the resources and strategies we use in school to help children develop their reading skills. Families were shown how these activities support word recognition, fluency, comprehension and confidence. We were pleased to be able to send many of these resources home so that families can continue practising together.
The hall was filled with excitement as children proudly shared books with their parents and carers. It was wonderful to see pupils taking on the role of teacher, demonstrating their growing reading skills and talking enthusiastically about their favourite stories.
Alongside reading, families enjoyed a range of interactive games designed to reinforce key literacy skills. Children worked together with parents, siblings and friends, developing confidence while having fun. The atmosphere was relaxed, positive and full of conversation about books and reading.
The photographs from the event capture some lovely moments:
Children reading alongside their parents and carers.
Families playing literacy games together.
Pupils sharing stories with friends.
Children confidently explaining their learning.
Lots of smiles, teamwork and enjoyment of reading.

We would like to thank all of the families who attended and helped make the afternoon such a success. Your support plays a vital role in developing a lifelong love of reading.
At St Illtyd’s Primary School, we believe that reading opens doors to imagination, knowledge and opportunity, and events such as our Reading Café help us work together to nurture confident, enthusiastic readers.
